Using Generators to Run Pipelines during Power Outages

After the 2005 hurricane season along the Gulf Coast, Colonial Pipeline purchased twelve large mobile generators and seven transformers to help it recover faster from power losses due to natural hazards. Indeed, this equipment allows running pumping stations along the pipeline to reduce disruptions when electric power is not available. Besides, after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008, the company implemented some resiliency measures, such as monitoring storm paths to preposition generators where power would most likely be lost. Colonial prepares for a hurricane season by completing maintenance and testing to ensure generators are road-worthy and that contractors are lined up to install and start up the units in case it is required.
