Summary

Energy operations in the Arctic, such as oil and gas extraction, face considerable challenges associated with climate. Moreover, climate change impacts are expected to occur very rapidly in Northern latitudes. British Petrol (BP) collaborated with ArcticNet, a research organization studying climate change impacts in the Arctic region, on a two-year study in the Beaufort Sea in Canada, where BP is planning an exploration project. The obtained data provides a useful baseline with which BP can compare future research, helping the company to understand the effects of climate change in this deepwater ocean environment and to improve the company’s capacity to make decisions on projects siting, design, and operations.
